About three hundred kilometers south of the equatorial line is the highest point in Africa, the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro, which is a dormant stratovolcano. It covers more than 390 hectares. Recently on its slope was discovered a plant that has survived here since prehistoric times.
The plant is Senecio kilimanjari. Over millions of years, this representative of flora has hardly changed. Ancient lizards once roamed in similar thickets.
The unique crucifer grows on the mountain, starting at a height of 3 kilometers. There is not much precipitation in this area, so the density of the prehistoric forest is low. The huge plants are all the more impressive being at a “respectable” distance from each other.
